CDS DS Podcast Episode 9: Gamified Learning and Ethical Edge Goes Live

In many organisations, e-learning still brings to mind clicking through slides, reading blocks of text and answering a multiple-choice question at the end. But effective learning should do more than confirm that someone has completed a module. It should help them understand, practise and apply what they have learned when it matters.
In Episode 9 of The Briefing Room, Karl Rees is joined by Austen Shand, Creative Lead in the Digital Learning Design team at CDS DS, to explore how gamified learning can make training more engaging, meaningful and effective.
What is Gamified Learning?
Gamified learning uses elements of game design, such as decision-making, storytelling, scoring and feedback, to create more immersive learning experiences.
Rather than asking learners to passively consume information, it places them into realistic scenarios where they can make choices, see consequences and reflect on their decisions.
As discussed in the episode, one of the key strengths of this approach is that it gives people a safe place to fail. Learners can explore difficult situations and build experience without the real-world consequences that may come with getting it wrong.
Moving Beyond Tick-Box Training
A common challenge with traditional e-learning is that it can become a tick-box exercise.
People may complete the training, but that does not always mean they have understood it, retained it or feel confident applying it.
Gamified learning helps address this by making the learner an active participant. Through realistic characters, believable scenarios and decision-based storytelling, learners are encouraged to think through what they would do and why.
This is particularly important in areas where judgement, behaviour and context matter.
