Human Factors Podcast Episode Goes Live
A look into Human Factors, exploring how good design, systems thinking and an understanding of human behaviour can help reduce error, improve usability and support safer outcomes.
When something goes wrong, it is often easy to blame the person. Someone missed a step. Someone made the wrong decision. Someone did not follow the process. But what if the system, equipment, environment, or pressure of the moment made that mistake more likely to happen?
In Episode 11 of The Briefing Room, Karl Rees is joined by Liz Hecht, a Human Factors specialist with more than 20 years’ experience, to explore what Human Factors means, why it matters, and how it can help people make better decisions.
What are Human Factors?
Human Factors, often shortened to HF, focuses on how people interact with systems, equipment, processes and environments. In the episode, Liz explains that Human Factors is about reviewing designs to ensure they are intuitive, usable and less likely to lead people into error.
Rather than assuming people will always behave perfectly, Human Factors considers how equipment or systems will actually be used in real situations. This can include factors such as time pressure, lighting, weather, workload, space, physical strain, accessibility, and the wider environment. The aim is simple: design systems that support people, rather than make mistakes more likely.
Designing Around Real Human Behaviour
A key theme of the episode is that people are not robots. Humans are affected by pressure, fatigue, distraction, environment, workload and the systems around them. That is why Human Factors looks beyond individual mistakes and asks a more useful question: What made that error possible?
By considering the user earlier in the design process, organisations can identify issues before they become expensive or difficult to fix. This could involve reviewing how equipment is maintained, whether controls are easy to use, whether instructions are clear, or whether a person can physically complete a task safely and consistently.
