Learn from Dr Colin Williams

The masterclass will be hosted by Dr Colin Williams, Principal Cyber Security and Information Assurance Consultant at CDS Defence & Security.

Colin brings more than three decades of experience in information assurance, cyber security and resilience, including extensive work supporting MOD, HMG and the wider defence and security community.

Alongside his consultancy work, Colin has held honorary academic roles at leading UK cyber security centres, including De Montfort University and the University of Warwick. His work explores the deeper systems, historical and conceptual foundations of cyber, helping organisations move beyond conventional defensive thinking and towards a more resilient approach to operating in complex digital environments.

In this introductory session, Colin will share practical insight into why resilience matters, where traditional cyber security thinking can fall short, and how organisations can begin to think differently about protecting the systems they rely on most.

What’s the difference between cyber resilience and cyber security?

There is a growing realisation that it’s not enough to think about cyber security in the conventional sense of implementing defensive controls to harden systems and ward off attackers. Deter, detect, delay, and respond after the event is no longer enough.

Instead, we now need to ensure that our critical systems can withstand and rapidly recover from the disturbances and attempted incursions that are the inevitable result of their operation.

As we have all long recognised, it’s not a question of if your defences are breached, but when. The adversary only has get lucky once to break through your conventional defences, no matter how strong you think they are.

As the aftermath of recent high profile ransomware attacks has demonstrated, the consequences of a lack of resilience can be severe. The British Library was hacked in October 2023 and as of April 2026 its services remain only partially restored.
