Student of the year John Donoghue receiving his award

We are delighted to announce that John Donoghue has been named the CDS 2026 Student of the Year.

This year's award is particularly significant, as John is the first Reserve Forces member to receive this prestigious recognition.

The CDS Student of the Year Award is not simply awarded for academic success or completing qualifications. It recognises individuals who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to professional development, leadership, coaching, and mentoring—not only throughout the programme but also in their everyday roles. It celebrates those who actively apply their learning to make a positive difference to the people and organisations they serve.

John exemplifies these values.

With a career spanning 24 years in the regular military, service within the ambulance sector, experience as a retained firefighter, and his current role supporting veterans as a case manager, John has consistently demonstrated a commitment to developing others. Through undertaking the Level 5 Coaching Award, he sought to strengthen coaching and mentoring practices within frontline services, helping colleagues grow, improve performance, and prepare for future leadership opportunities.

Speaking after receiving the award from Simon Winman of CDS DS, John said:

"Coaching and mentoring are vital if we want people to grow, improve standards, and be ready to step into the roles that follow us."

John's passion for supporting others, combined with his dedication to continuous learning, embodies everything the Student of the Year Award represents. His plans to continue his development through Level 7 study and ultimately a PhD further demonstrate his commitment to lifelong learning and professional excellence.

Congratulations, John, on this well-deserved achievement. Your dedication to coaching, mentoring, leadership, and supporting both veterans and frontline professionals is an inspiration to others across military, reserve, and civilian sectors.
